Punjab gets first woman Chief Secretary
Vini Mahajan, the new Chief Secretary, Punjab

Chandigarh:  A 1987-batch IAS officer, Vini Mahajan is the new Chief Secretary, Punjab. The order of her appointment was passed on Friday June 26, 2020.

With this, she has become the first woman bureaucrat to get the coveted top post in a state.

She replaces Karan Avtar Singh, a 1984-batch IAS officer, who has been transferred as Special Chief Secretary, Governance Reforms and Public Grievances, the post held by Mahajan before her elevation to the top post.

Mahajan will also hold additional post of Principal Secretary, Department of Personnel and Vigilance which was earlier with her predecessor Singh.

Notably, her appointment has created another record in the annals of bureaucratic history of Punjab, as she and her husband Dinker Gupta, the incumbent Director General of Police (DGP), Punjab, have become the first ‘power couple’ by virtue of simultaneously holding both top posts in any state of the country.

DGP Gupta is also a 1987-batch IPS officer.

  1. Congratulations. The best person indeed for the post. I am sure Punjab will progress under her able leadership.
Her husband DGP Dinkar Gupta is also one of the finest person I have the honour of knowing since 1996.
God bless them with continued wisdom to lead our State

  2. Vini Mahajan is a highly experienced bureaucrat equipped with solid academic and professional background. I remember when I heard her at a CII programme at Chandigarh, showed her remarkable clarity about various issues. She knows the pulse of Punjab; Knows the problems of industry as well as agriculture. Now the Punjab is in safe hands. A post graduate from IIM knows the managerial intricacies much better than anybody else. I wish her good luck in her new assignment

  3. Glad to see, a woman leading up and front. wishing much more power and strength to the “power couple”. We need such inspirational instances especially for the young generation to emulate.

  4. Rather than claiming, this is the case where women empowerment has been actually enacted in bureaucratic administration and I hope to see more of such positive decisions taken in the future! Congratulations!!!
