Mohali: Vice-Chairman, Punjab Agro and senior Congress leader of Dera Bassi constituency Manpreet Singh ‘Bunny’ Sandhu has hailed Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh as the Guardian of Farmers.
This expression, he said, was the logical extension of Captain Amarinder’s sincere passion and commitment towards saving Punjab’s agrarian economy and its biggest stake holder farmers. He was then hailed as the Guardian of Punjab’s Waters.
The senior Congress leader cited Chief Minister’s daring action of annulling water agreements to protect Punjab’s economic interests during his previous term in the office from 2002 to 2007. “I would say it’s no exaggeration to hail Captain Amarinder as Guardian of Farmers now for leading his government and the party in taking a principled stand against the farm laws enacted by the BJP-led government at the Centre,” commented Sandhu.
He further argued that Captain Amarinder again proved that he stood by the state’s farmers during this difficult time by calling the special two-day session of Punjab Vidhan Sabha solely to counter the Centre’s anti-farmer and anti-federal farm laws.
Sandhu rued the Shiromani Akali Dal led by Sukhbir Singh Badal was blowing its own political trumpet when a united political stand was badly needed in the present critical juncture. “The Akalis and other political rivals must rise to the occasion and support Captain Amarinder government unconditionally if they are sincere in protecting Punjab and its farmers’ rights. Their words must meet action on the ground,” said Sandhu.
Making another argument, the Congress leader recalled Captain Amarinder’s consistent stand on highly sensitive issue of Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) Canal which is very crucial to the state’s agriculture and economy. The Centre must heed his demand of setting up a water tribunal to settle this inter-state dispute. This showed Captain Amarinder’s farsightedness, the hallmark of a seasoned leader who is not guided by petty vested political interests.
