Chandigarh: Punjab Government will launch the scheme for distribution of smartphones to the students on August 12.

With this, Congress party will have fulfilled its poll promise of providing state-of-the-art smartphones to the state’s youth on coming to power.

Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Monday said that the Government has chosen the auspicious occasion of Janmashtami to launch the scheme.

Coincidentally, August 12 is also the International Youth Day, he added.

To avoid large gatherings, the launch will be organised in 26 different locations in Chandigarh and Punjab. All the district headquarters and some major towns will be covered on this day.  About 15 students of that town/district will be invited at each location and handed over the smartphones.

As the needy sections of the student community are facing problems in accessing online education content amid Covid-19 situation, these phones will be extremely helpful to them in accessing a host of information available on the web as well as other learning material, said the Chief Minister.

The state government had already received the first consignment of 50,000 smartphones and the supply of the remaining ones is in the pipeline.

The state cabinet had recently decided to give these phone sets, in the first phase, to all boys and girls studying in Class 12 in all the state-run schools. Total about 1.75 lakh phones will be distributed in the initial phase.
